Acupressure is believed to be the forerunner of acupuncture and has many similarities. The pressure points are the same and it is also used to balance the Qi, or flow of energy, which is believed to run through invisible channels known as meridians. The difference is that instead of using needles the treatment of acupressure is carried out by firm massage.

Acupressure is not considered as a cure but more as a way of relieving symptoms and can be used in conjunction with other treatments. Success is claimed in the relief of the following ailments: allergy, arthritis, asthma, back pain, circulation problems, depression, digestive problem, insomnia, migraine, and tension.

Therapists have their own ways of using acupressure. Differences may occur in the amount of pressure used and the combination of pressure points they work on. The patient is asked to sit or lie while the therapist massages them. Loose clothing is worn and no oils or lotions are used during the treatment. Discomfort may be felt by the patient but this soon passes and results are swift. A session may last between thirty and sixty minutes. Further sessions may be required.

Some common ailments may be treated at home. Following are a few you might like to try.

For Headache, toothache, menstrual cramp and constipation.

(Pressure point = large intestine 4)

Squeeze the point contained in the web of flesh between the thumb and forefinger. The pressure should be towards the finger. Massage firmly for about five minutes on each hand.

For nausea from any cause, such as travel sickness, pregnancy or anxiety.

(Pressure point = pericardium 6)

Find the point on the inside of the forearm about 2 inches from the wrist. Press with your thumb for about five to ten minutes.

To stimulate energy and to soothe babies’ colic and babies’ and adults’ digestive problems.

(Pressure point stomach 36)

Find the point about 3 inches below the knee on the outside of the leg. Press deeply with your thumb for five to ten minutes.

For painful conditions these treatments can be repeated two or three times every hour.
